Celtic make move for £8.5m Sampdoria Defender
Newspaper reports in Italy have linked Celtic with a formal offer for Sampdoria centre-half Omar Colley.
The Secolo XIX newspaper has reported that we have offered £2m for an initial loan deal with a view to a £6.5m permanent transfer at the end of the season.
The Gambian international, who is 27 years old, has been linked with West Ham United in recent weeks and there is speculation that the Italian club are looking for a fee closer to €10m.
Colley joined Sampdoria in 2018 for a fee of £8m from KRC Genk in Belgium and his current employers are believed to be seeking a profit on their investment in him.
At 6ft 3in, he seems relatively quick for a centre-half and likes to step in ahead of attackers. Being left-footed he would bring balance to Celtic's current options at centre half, with the right-footed Christopher Jullien and Kris Ajer being our only senior options in that position. Nir Bitton is also right-sided and is a converted midfield player.
Talk has cooled in the last couple of days around Celtic's pursuit of Shane Duffy, but the Irish defender is said to be very keen on joining the Hoops this summer.
Whether it be Colley or Duffy, there's no doubt we need a centre half in the door as quickly as possible. Not only is depth a problem in this area but Kris Ajer is being linked with a new club every week, Southampton the latest.
We will need to add at least 2 centre halves to the squad if Ajer does end up departing.
